common genetic variant may increase the risk of weight gain 2015-10-23

Research have found a common genetic variant may increase the risk of a high body mass index by increasing the amount of time a person spends sitting, according to a new study.

Klimentidis and colleagues used multiple long-term studies involving more than 4,000 subjects each, known as the Framingham Heart Study and the Women’s Health Initiative, to examine whether a common variant of a gene called FTO was related to self-reported time spent sitting.

The researchers acknowledge that we may copy level of activity of our parents as we grow up but we also inherit some predisposition to sitting in our genes.

The specific genes affect obesity but there may be more about biological mechanisms, and we can target those biological mechanisms through drugs,” or through specific preventive measures, he said.

It is too soon to map everyone’s genes looking for the high-BMI variant of the FTO gene, which is found in more than a quarter of people with European descent. What has been learned is that there are not a handful of genes that determine obesity, but hundreds of thousands of genes, each with very small effects.

McKinseys Health Insurance Survey 2011-06-21

You might have heard about McKinsey & Co’s health care insurance survey and the ensuing ruckus. Finally under fire from Democrats in Congress, McKinsey released its methodology that found as many as 30 percent of employers might drop health insurance after the new health law takes effect in 2014.

In question 41 of survey, employers were told, "Assume exchanges become an easy, affordable way for individuals to obtain health insurance." Then they were given examples of how much low and moderate-income workers would likely have to pay for that insurance, given the availability of federal subsidies. (Hint: Not that much; the maximum annual premium for a family of four earning $44,100 is likely to be around $2,778, they were told.). This question seems to be written to solicit a pre-conceived response and not at all get at what the business really will do.

It seems that the survey team at McKinsey needs to take an introductory course in how to write valid survey question – or maybe they have and they were not going for a valid survey after all!

Healthcare News Update 2011-06-20

Over the past 100 years , there has been a long list of attempt by politician to reform health care. President Obama signed legislation on March 23, 2010 after a long partisan combat to overhaul the nation's health care system and guarantee access to medical insurance for a large portion of Americans.

This was the most important single legislative achievement in the healthcare and one of the most of controversial one over his first two years in office. Republican have been able to hold to their message and not a single Republican voted for the final version. Most likely the next presidential campaign will be focusing on healthcare in addition to the economy, Republicans across the country campaigned on a promise to repeal the bill.

It is extremely important for both health care providers (healthcare, Medical Doctor, Dentist, Chiropractor, Optometrist, eldercare, elder care, others) and patients to provides feedback and thoughts on the topics.
